Autonomous Time Wasting Machine - 2019

Autonomous Time Wasting System No. 1

Autonomous Time Wasting System No. 1 is a fictitious machine created to explore contemporary leisure activities through the conceptual lens of pre-industrial political theory and pre-digital media.

Before the distraction of deliberate economies, political theorists sought to organize societies in ways that nurture and develop human beings. In order to understand ways to fulfill the human condition, behavioral analysis was often the foundation of any plan to organize civilization. Often, these plans assumed that all human activities should revolve around the need to inquire and create.

As a media installation, Autonomous Time Wasting System No. 1 uses four synchronized video monitors within a mechanical structure to imagine physical representations of psychological conditions that occur during modern leisure activities. Once the machine has selected a specific leisure activity, its psychological condition is represented using electrical signals belonging to pre-digital video graphics. Ultimately, the installation is the first in a series of systems that explore the modern landscape of human activity and passing of time.
